Casting for 13th Doctor announced.
They actually did it. Well, one "it."
I am going to have to start watching again, aren't I? Where should I start? I left off towards the end of Clara's run. Can I just pick up with the new companion and call it good?
ETA Promo made both me and the small fanperson squee loudly.

I know I've done this before (probably more than once), but I'm in a Whovian mood today (possibly because we just watched the new episode last night).
Today's Grading Hell Theater has options:
1. If one or more of your favorite characters could take one trip in the TARDIS (with the usual restrictions about not messing with their own pasts), where would they go?
2. If the Doctor showed up in your favorite show/comic/canon, what would happen?
3. Same as #2, with a companion.
It takes James Lester one three-minute phone call with the PM to determine that the very, very, very last thing they need added to the current mess is an alien with an unreliable time machine. He quietly initiates Code No Way In Hell, which adds just enough sedative to the various coffee pots around the ARC to make everyone sleep just long enough for the Doctor to do whatever it is he's there to do (Lester really doesn't want to know. No, he doesn't). Naturally, Connor is resistant to the sedative, because that's just Lester's luck, and had to be physically restrained from entering the TARDIS. He sulked for a week, but whatever Lester threatened him with kept him from telling the others.
Of all the places Sarah Jane Smith ever visited with the Doctor, the little pocket reality in New York City was perhaps the one she thinks of most wistfully. When she hears from Maria that she and her dad are looking for a place to get away from everything for a week, Sarah Jane gives them very precise directions. She doesn't worry about the pictures Maria sends her from that week getting out. Everyone will just think it's puppets anyway.
Your turn!

Based on recent troubles, no surprise.
You know those software "upgrades" that add a bunch of useless bells and whistles and somehow strip the software of its functionality? Yeah, those. How do your favorite characters deal with them, or their equivalent?
Gallifrey used to send regular upgrades to all TARDISes, even ones that were not, strictly speaking, in their possession. The Doctor could never figure out how to block them, and they ruined his life for weeks. He ranted and swore and fiddled and rearranged wires and pleaded with the TARDIS to spit it back at those bastards because they were doing this just to annoy him. The TARDIS would eventually sort things out herself. It took the Doctor nearly two years to realize that he hadn't had to deal with one lately, and that he never would again. That was not a good day.
Software Upgrade Days are marked on all calenders in the ARC. In red. Bright, screaming, bloody red. Connor never understands what the fuss is.

I know I've done this before, but I'm still on a Doctor Who high, so:
Today on Grading Hell Theater, your favorite characters get one (1) trip in the TARDIS. Assuming the usual restrictions about not interfering with one's own past apply (no, John and/or Dean, you cannot go save Mary; not that you won't still try and create another situation for the Doctor to fix, but still), where/when would they go?
I suspect Jessica Fletcher would want to go to a famous unsolved murder. Jack the Ripper and the Black Dahlia might be a tad too bloody, although really, could she resist Jack? I think not. Of course, she would accidentally solve it, but the Duke of Whatever would turn out to be an alien anyway, so history would remain intact.
This would of course create problems later when Emily Prentiss wanted to go to the same time. Er, wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey?
Your turn!

I am having a day where I am beyond irrationally crabby to afraid I will bite the head off of the next person I actually speak to. And I have no actual idea why. I was going to try to start a fake flame war to cheer myself up, but I'm not sure I could top Elmo V. Cookie Monster, you know?
Then I watched Doctor Who. I am still irrationally crabby, but not about that. Please note the squee tag.
( Spoilers are below. Get it? Below? Everyone's a critic.Collapse )

Note: I debated the squee tag, but I do have some critical commentary here, and am not opposed to hearing more. That said, I did squee, and I am kind of bouncing, so if your reaction was, "hated it!", just...don't kill my high, 'k?

Doctor Who, that is. Non-spoiler reaction: meh. Didn't love it, didn't hate it, although being spoiled probably contributed to the latter. My expectations were low, and the one thing that would have caused me rage just made me sigh instead. I have only one comment, really, and that is ( definitely a spoilerCollapse )
Still withholding judgment on what is to come. I said in my meme that we're stuck in a rut, and the casting is still dampening my enthusiasm, but I'm not down on it enough to give up. Hey, we just got BBC on our cable package! I can't quit now!

Assuming the usual restrictions about not interfering with one's own past apply (no, John and/or Dean, you cannot go save Mary; not that you won't still try and create another situation for the Doctor to fix, but still), where/when would they go?
Michael Westin would go to the future. Not very far, just 50-100 years or so. He'd tag along on the inevitable adventure, being very helpful, not stealing anything, just looking at future tech very, very carefully. The Doctor would catch him eying the sonic screwdriver longingly, sigh, and dig up a very old version from a trunk in some corner of the TARDIS. "Doesn't do nearly as much," he'll say, "but it might get you out of a jam or three."
Fiona will look around to make sure no one who knows her is there, then ask to go to Regency England. She'll dig up a dress from the TARDIS's wardrobe, very carefully arrange her hair, and set out on the Doctor's arm. It will be a whole ten minutes before she slugs anyone.
Sam wants to go to any place where there's a beach and lots of beer. How he somehow ends up running from alien bounty hunters is a story even he's not sure he could make sense of.
Your turn! Feel free, btw, to mix in Doctors and Companions.

Dear Self: You can argue with self-righteous fanatics, or you can talk about the Doctor Who finale. Which of these actually sounds like fun? Hugs, Yourself.
Finally got around to watching. I decided that
slashspouse, after "Oh, let's watch it tomorrow" –ing me about the first part for a week and then leaving right after we obtained the second, had forfeited the right to have me wait and watch with him. He agrees, btw, but that's on accounta he's scared of me.
(Kidding! Mostly.)
(It occurs to me, btw, that last time, the reason I was late watching the finale was that I was, oh, HAVING A BABY. Score one for less dramatic reasons.)
( spoilers are self-referentialCollapse )

( The Doctor's DaughterCollapse )
( The Unicorn and the WaspCollapse )
Like I said, no critical faculties at all.

So, since the general consensus seems to be in favor of the "My Other Car Seat Is In The TARDIS" onesie, the next question is, who's gonna design the text for me? *eyelash bat*
(What? You know by now I have no shame of any kind. I also kind of lack talent where such things are concerned. I can do it, but it doesn't look good. For that matter, if any of you who have existing zazzle or CafePress stores wanna take the idea and throw it up, I would totally not protest, because I am lazy.)
Meanwhile, "Fires of Pompeii." ( spoilers see the futureCollapse )
In other news, I appear to have lost my 2 gig flash drive. Frak.

I enjoyed reading everyone's fannish joy. Seriously, it got me through a kind of fraught weekend.
jegie has created a WoW guild called Fights Like A Girl. This pleases me very, very much.
We've been watching some old school Who lately, and last night's was an early Tom Baker ep. This had me pondering two things. One was just the awesomeness of Sarah Jane (and we really need to watch the rest of SJA). The other one is a principle I'd call the First Companion Principle, which involves the way your first companion looms large in your DW experience. There's a longer essay in this, and I'm sure someone has already written it.
(My first companion was in fact Sarah Jane, in case you were wondering. I think Harry was there, too, but not for long.)
On that note, query for you all: which pre-Ninth-Doctor (I have really never gotten comfortable just calling them by their numbers, which another interesting older/newer split, I've noticed) companion would you like to bring back for a one-shot? For me, the answer is always Susan, because while she's not my favorite, she's the one who'd have the most interesting implications. (Romana, IMHO, is a veeeeerrrrry close second, there.) I talked about how I'd do it here, but really, I'd just like to hear her overtly mentioned sometime. I know that's not really how things are done (although interestingly, the Doctor mentioned Vicky in the ep we watched last night), but dude: granddaughter.
So who would you bring back, and how?
I've also been pondering Jack (as one does), and the timeline in terms of when Torchwood was conceived of, and to what extent, if any, was Jack created to be spun off. I'm sure that information's out there, too ;).
Hey, I said it was random.

Before I get to that, I just have to ask an unrelated question: did a memo go out that I had a baby girl? Is this why dead little girls and dead daughters are plaguing me across television, movies, and books?
Yes, I know, I'm just noticing it more, but I'm taking King's latest book personal, yo.
And now, onto happier things like Doctor Who.
( spoilers are little and cuteCollapse )
ETA If anyone wants to link me to their reaction post, I'd be forever grateful. It's amazing how hard it is to find these things even a few days later.

Okay, so it's nearly a week late. I have a good excuse, honest.
Actually, first, let me say that I spent days, days predicting that I would go into labor just as I clicked "save" on this episode. I was wrong. By about 12 hours. In fact, one might say I gave birth right around when I normally find the episode on the average Saturday. Apparently, she was as eager to see it as I was.
So, between the circumstances under which I watched (and yes, we had it downloaded and burned about five hours after we got home from the hospital) and exactly that build-up, it's hard for me even to figure out my reactions to the episode, let alone articulate them. So instead, I'm going to focus a bit on the future.
( what I'm hoping - includes some speculation for future seasons of DW and TWCollapse )
In totally unrelated stuff, it should surprise exactly no one that I'm waaaaaay behind on my flist and expect to stay that way for a while. I've considered all kinds of things, from trimming to filtering, but there's just no way to arrange things to keep up with all I want to see. So instead, I'm just asking as a favor: if you post something you think I might like/want/need to see, feel utterly free to point me at it. I make no guarantees, but I am officially declaring this LJ a self-pimping friendly zone.

Despite having a great deal of grading to do, I'm not going to do a Grading Hell Theater. Why? Because the last time I did one, my day took the kind of turn that even lovely double-drabbles could not distract me from, and now I'm all superstitious. I expect to get over this soon.
(ObNote: Nothing personally dire, not in any trouble, I'm fine, we're all fine, everyone's fine, etc etc.)
Instead, I'm going to post episode reactions, and beg, whine, and plead with you to link me to your own, as I know I missed a lot of the Doctor Who ones.
So, first, Doctor Who, 3x06.
( spoilers will change what it means to be humanCollapse )
And then there was Blood Ties.
( spoilers have seen Fight Club one too many timesCollapse )
So, thoughts?
ETA Did I mention that my first dream last night involved trying to convince Mike Celluci that the Daleks in the house were dangerous, and him not believing me? I actually woke up scared, because dude, there were Daleks in my house.
Note to self: it might be time to mix up the Who eps on the Netflix queue a bit.

Breaking the pattern a bit.
It's a bit fun watching some of the oldest Doctor Who eps (although my God do they drag - seriously, I've often praised the series for taking how long it took to tell a story instead of trying to cram it into an hour, but fifteen minutes of the Doctor and Ian looking around an empty landscape and finding nothing is a bit much, people!) and then switching to the newest. For example, we just watched the very first appearance of the Daleks the other night, which meant things like...right, spoilers.
( spoilers are so nice they named them twiceCollapse )
And then there was Blood Ties.
( spoilers don't react well to sunlightCollapse )

So, I'm sitting here contemplating a post on the whole fake identities thing, because the notion that it's perfectly okay to lie to people about your identity (not withhold information, but actively lie) because it's just the internet makes me cranky, but then I thought to myself, "Self, life is too short and the papers you will have to grade starting tomorrow are too many to dwell on the cranky-making."
And so I present, Fannish Things That Are Making Me Very Happy Right Now.
(Note: spoilers possible, even likely, up through current eps. Except for Farscape, 'cause we just started that.)
